"English becomes more accessible when a student understands not only what they are learning, but how they learn best."
Kerensa is a highly experienced English teacher and tutor with over 20 years’ teaching experience in Bristol and Guernsey. She holds a PGCE in English Language and Literature from the University of Bristol and a BA in American Studies from the University of Manchester, with further postgraduate study in Literary Theory and Screenwriting.
Since 2018, Kerensa has taught English at Guernsey Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre, following six years at Les Beaucamps High School and earlier teaching experience in Bristol.
Her experience encompasses curriculum planning, assessment, differentiated teaching and working collaboratively with SENCo colleagues to support students experiencing difficulties with comprehension and learning.
About Kerensa
“Kerensa’s ability to understand how my son learns has not only supported his academic progress, but also had a positive impact on his confidence and emotional development. His new-found positive mindset gave him the grounding he needed to move successfully into the next phase of his education and gain his place at college.”
— Parent of GCSE English Student
At GCSE, Kerensa combines a clear understanding of examination requirements with an equally strong focus on the individual student.
Her professional record documents targeted teaching strategies based around examination assessment objectives resulting in an average 1.5-grade uplift at GCSE, with other approaches producing improvements of up to four sublevels of progress.
Kerensa recognises that students process language, ideas and information differently. Rather than expecting every student to work in the same way, she adapts her teaching to help each young person find approaches that make challenging material more accessible, whilst maintaining clear expectations and academic structure.

How Kerensa Teaches
Storytelling & Communication
Storytelling is central to Kerensa’s approach to English. She uses it to help students understand structure, language, character and meaning, as well as the relationship between writer and reader.
Her background in Literary Theory and Screenwriting brings an additional dimension to this work, helping students explore how texts are constructed and how writers communicate ideas.
Reading alongside the student
Kerensa works alongside students as readers – sharing passages, alternating paragraphs or taking different voices.
This allows her to hear how a student is processing a text whilst modelling fluent and expressive reading herself. Her approach is flexible but purposeful: she adapts how a student reaches an objective without losing sight of the objective itself.
Understanding the learner
Kerensa looks beyond the immediate piece of work to understand what may be preventing progress.
She recognises that students process language and information differently and helps them develop practical strategies that work for them, particularly those who find conventional approaches to language and literacy challenging.
Her experience of differentiated teaching and working alongside SENCo colleagues supports this individual approach.
What Parents Say
"When we first started with Kerensa, my daughter was struggling to keep up in class and had lost confidence in her abilities. Within weeks, I noticed a huge change—not only in her progress reports but in her attitude toward learning. Kerensa'spatience, encouragement, and creative teaching methods made all the difference. She doesn’t just teach the subject; she inspires a love for learning. We couldn’t be more grateful for her support." - Parent of Student aged 13
More than Exam Technique
For older students, Kerensa’s teaching naturally extends beyond examination technique.
She recognises that the GCSE years are also a time when young people are beginning to understand themselves as learners, consider their future choices and develop greater independence.
Kerensa helps students build the confidence to approach challenges more positively, understand the strategies that work for them and become more independent in their learning.
Her aim is not only to help students prepare for their exams, but to equip them with greater confidence and self-belief as they move on to the next stage of their education.
The Student before the Syllabus
Her aim is not simply to teach English, but to understand the individual young person in front of her and find the way into the subject that works for them.
By adapting her approach whilst maintaining clear academic expectations, Kerensa helps students develop greater confidence in their own abilities and a better understanding of how they learn.
